There is currently a struggle being waged across Peru against the "Conga" mining project, which the comuneros fear will deplete and contaminate vital water supplies. Just today the Peruvian state announced that 40 organizers and community leaders have been detained.

Open Pit is a documentary on the struggle by indigenous communities against the ravages of open pit gold mining at Yanacocha and other sites in the Cajamarca highlands in northern Peru by transnational corporations. Yanacocha is one of the largest open pit gold mines in the world.
